A Bespoke Home for Athena & the Ferrets
This was a great project to get stuck into.
The brief was to build a secure outdoor enclosure that would house two very different residents — Athena the Harris hawk on one side, and a group of feral ferrets on the other. One structure, two setups, each built around their individual needs.
Athena’s Side
For the aviary, security and airflow were the main focus. We fitted a galvanised steel front so the space feels open while remaining safe and solid.
We also incorporated a mesh section into part of the roof. This was important, as it allows natural light, rain and breeze into the enclosure, helping Athena experience the natural elements and display normal behaviours. The rest of the roof is solid, giving her proper shelter when the weather turns.
The Ferrets’ Side
Ferrets are curious (and determined), so their side needed to be strong and properly secure. We used pressure-treated timber throughout and made sure everything was well fixed and escape-proof.
It’s a straightforward, durable setup that’s built to handle daily use and plenty of activity.
The End Result
The finished build sits neatly alongside the property and does exactly what it needs to do — two secure, practical spaces within one clean structure.
Projects like this are what bespoke work is all about. Listening to what’s needed and building something that works properly in real life.
