Rethinking Rabbit Housing: Why Welfare Matters More Than Ever

Rabbits are one of the most popular pets in the UK—but they are also, unfortunately, among the most neglected. A major reason for this is the widespread availability of small, unsuitable hutches sold in many pet stores, which simply do not meet a rabbit’s basic welfare needs.

At Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF), the message is clear: traditional hutches are not enough. Rabbits need space, security, and enrichment to live healthy, happy lives—especially when housed outdoors.

Why Traditional Hutches Fall Short

Many commercially available hutches are far too small, often designed with convenience in mind rather than animal welfare. Rabbits kept in these conditions can suffer from:

  • Lack of exercise, leading to obesity and poor health
  • Stress and boredom, which can result in destructive or withdrawn behaviour
  • Increased vulnerability to extreme weather and predators

Rabbits are active, intelligent animals that need room to run, stretch, and express natural behaviours. Confining them to cramped spaces doesn’t just limit their quality of life—it can actively harm their wellbeing.

What Proper Outdoor Rabbit Housing Looks Like

Outdoor housing, when done correctly, can provide an enriching and secure environment for rabbits. Based on RWAF and RSPCA guidance, there are several key elements every setup should include:

  • Adequate space – A minimum enclosure size of 3m x 2m, allowing rabbits to hop, run, and stand fully upright
  • Secure mesh – Strong, predator-resistant materials such as 16-gauge wire, with small apertures (around 13mm x 13mm) to prevent vermin access
  • Safe construction – Durable materials like stainless steel mesh, which offer a safer alternative to galvanised alternatives
  • Shelter and protection – A weatherproof sleeping area that shields rabbits from wind, rain and temperature extremes
  • Enrichment – Opportunities for digging, hiding and exploring to support both physical and mental health

Our Commitment to Rabbit Welfare

Following our work in line with RWAF standards, we are proud to be recognised as RWAF-approved suppliers of rabbit housing. This approval reflects our commitment to designing and building enclosures that genuinely meet the needs of rabbits—not just the expectations of the market.

We have developed a dedicated range of outdoor rabbit housing, available through our website, each designed with welfare at its core. Our housing can also be tailored with a range of practical upgrades, including:

  • PVC-lined insulation for improved warmth and weather resistance
  • Wipe-clean flooring for easier maintenance and better hygiene
  • Ramps and raised shelves to encourage natural behaviours and provide added enrichment

These optional features allow owners to create a more comfortable, stimulating, and easy-to-manage environment for their rabbits.

Raising Awareness, Changing Standards

Improving rabbit welfare starts with awareness. Too often, rabbits are treated as low-maintenance pets, when in reality they require thoughtful care, appropriate housing, and regular interaction.

By choosing properly designed outdoor housing, owners can make a significant difference to their rabbits’ quality of life. It’s not just about meeting minimum standards—it’s about giving rabbits the space and environment they need to thrive.

A Better Future for Rabbits

The shift away from small hutches towards larger, welfare-focused enclosures is long overdue. As awareness grows, so too does the opportunity to improve the lives of thousands of rabbits across the UK.

We’re proud to be part of that change—providing housing solutions that reflect modern welfare standards and supporting owners in making better choices for their animals.

Because when it comes to rabbit care, “good enough” simply isn’t good enough anymore.
