Barn Owl Aviaries

Our barn owl aviaries are designed around how barn owls actually live: quiet, sheltered and secure, with room to fly between perches. Every aviary is handmade to order in Staffordshire, so we can size it to your birds, your site and whether you’re housing pets, display birds or birds for rehabilitation.

Wooden barn owl aviary with sheltered mews and mesh flight

What makes a good barn owl aviary?

  • A sheltered, draught-free section. Barn owl feathers are not waterproof, so a solid-roofed, enclosed area where they can stay dry is essential.
  • Space to fly. A flight long enough for the owl to move between perches, not just hop.
  • Quiet surroundings. Solid side panels screen the birds from disturbance, dogs and traffic.
  • Secure, predator-proof mesh fixed to the inside of the frame, with a safety porch or corridor so birds can’t slip out when you enter.
  • Nest boxes and natural perches at different heights, plus an easy-clean floor.

Sizes and layouts

We build everything from single owl aviaries to multi-bay owl and bird of prey blocks. Size depends on the number of birds and how much time they spend in the aviary. As a guide, longer is better than taller: a long flight lets the owl fly a few wingbeats between perches. Tell us about your birds and site and we’ll recommend a layout.

Barn owl aviary FAQs

How big should a barn owl aviary be?

It should give the owl room to fly between perches, plus a dry, enclosed roost. A single bird needs less space than a pair or group, and the more time the owl spends in the aviary, the bigger it should be. We’ll recommend a size for your birds.

Do barn owls need a covered aviary?

Yes. Barn owls get waterlogged easily, so part of the aviary should have a solid roof and solid sides to keep them dry and out of the wind.

What mesh is best for an owl aviary?

Strong welded mesh fixed to the inside of the frame, so the birds can’t damage their feathers on the timber and predators can’t get in.

Can you build an owl aviary for a rescue centre or school?

Yes. We regularly build for wildlife parks, farms, rescue centres and schools, including viewing areas and multi-bay blocks.
