Apex Shed or Pent?
Buying a new garden shed
Tips on choosing a roof style for your new wooden garden shed.
Introducing apex and pent garden sheds. When you are looking to purchase a new garden shed, one thing you will need to consider right from the start is whether to opt for an ‘apex’ or a ‘pent’ shed. These two options refer to the style of roof.
An apex shed style has a traditional, classic appearance, while a pent shed style offers a more subtle and modern design. Despite these two differences, both options have their advantages and disadvantages.
Besides your personal preference in terms of the appearance of the shed, there are a number of practical considerations to take into account as well, namely: what is the intended use? You may wish to use the shed for storage, as a ‘man cave’, a study or workshop, or even for growing potted plants.
Since there is no superior type of shed, your decision will likely come down to other factors. That said, below we provide all the details you need to make an informed selection:
Benefits of apex sheds
An apex shed is perhaps what first comes to mind when most people think about garden sheds. Visit any specialist shed website and you will immediately be greeted with countless apex sheds for sale.
An apex shed has the classic angled /\ design where the roof slopes down on either side. This provides the shed with additional height in the centre of the structure.
As a result, an apex shed has a distinct advantage over a pent shed if you are wanting to store tall items. The design can also be beneficial if you like to work inside your shed and set up shelving to store equipment. The apex roof will create a natural walkway down the middle of the shed, providing ample headroom.
When it begins to rain, an apex shed has a natural slope that quickly dissipates water from the roof, helping to keep the structure of the shed stronger for longer. This also prevents damage to the roof and reduces unnecessary maintenance.
Benefits of pent sheds
Pent styles differ from apex in that they have one single sloped roof. This makes them suitable for storing smaller or medium-sized equipment. The design is also suited if you need to restrict the height of your shed, either due to neighbouring properties or to match the overall look and feel of your garden.
The slightly angled roof on a pent shed allows water to flow freely away from the shed. You can easily add your own guttering to your pent shed which will divert rainwater to a water butt.

Dog Kennel and Run Upgrades
Our dog kennels for sale are also available with the optional upgrades listed below. We have included as much information as possible to help you decide on the best configuration for your dog kennel, but please do give us a call if you would like any help on what would be best for your requirements. We promise no hard sell – we want you to be happy with your new dog kennel and run. We can offer ideas on what kennel upgrades would be best for you; we will also let you know if you don’t need it! For example, if your dog is going to be housed in your new dog kennel for long periods of time or overnight, then we would recommend the insulation and sliding hatches. If your dog is only going to be kept in a smaller garden kennel for a few hours whilst you are at work, then we would maybe recommend the wipe clean floor to help with maintenance if there are any accidents when you get home. Onduline is a popular choice for exposed areas that suffer from the elements, whilst the stable door is a good idea for an occasional pet kennel and can give a less ‘locked away’ feel.

SLIDING HATCH Our sliding hatches are added over the pop hole to the dog’s sleeping area. We use the same material as the wipe clean flooring, and aluminium runners allow you to slide it up and down as required. It separates the sleeping area from the run and is ideal for keeping your dog indoors at night.

WHELPING HATCH A half sized sliding hatch for whelping – low enough for mum to jump over for a break yet high enough to keep her pups safe inside. The Whelping Sliding Hatch fits in the same runners as the full hatch, and can be supplied FREE OF CHARGE when you pay for the full sliding hatch upgrade. *This is only available with the purchase of the sliding hatch upgrade on any of our dog kennels and runs or multi bay kennel blocks. Please let us know when ordering if you want this option*

WIPE CLEAN FLOOR Phenolic coatings provide protection against moisture allowing easier maintenance and cleaning. The 12mm boarding is added to the sleep area and provides a non-slip and durable surface.

PVC INSULATION 40mm polystyrene is fitted between the framework in walls and flooring then lined with 2mm white PVC sheeting. It keeps dogs cool in the summer, warm in the winter and the wipe clean surface provides easy maintenance.

STABLE DOOR Add a stable door to the sleeping area. Perfect for puppies or allowing the door to be open whilst keeping your dog inside.

ONDULINE ROOF Corrugated, bitumen based roof sheeting provides extra protection against the elements and is ideal for exposed areas
Full Height Pent Kennel and Run
A returning customer requested a custom build based on our Alton single dog kennel and run – to have dog run panels to two sides of the dog run, a solid wooden back and a full height pent roof. PVC lined insulation and wipe clean flooring was added to the kennel sleeping area, along with a sliding hatch to the pop hole which was 1ft from the floor.
The total size of the dog kennel was 10ft6in x 5ft. The dog kennel sleeping area was 4ft x 5ft, and the dog run was 6ft6in x 5ft.
We will be adding this Single dog kennel and run to our standard range of kennels for sale as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you would like more information or would like to order one for your own garden, please call 01782 821103.

High Grade Tongue & Groove Timber
We build all of our dog kennels and runs, garden buildings and bespoke animal housing from high quality, A-Grade Scandinavian Redwood. The timber is pressure treated with TanalithE protecting against insect attack, rot and decay for many years. Because of this, the tanalising process extends the life of your dog kennel and run.
We use ex50mm x ex50mm framework (45mm finished) and 16.5mm x ex125mm (12mm thick finished) tongue and groove shiplap cladding on walls, floors and ceilings to create you a strong structure that will last. Our tongue and groove has a 10mm rebate to allow expansion and movement in the boards – larger than the majority of our competitors. Therefore, allowing space for timber expansion which reduces the chance of popped boards.

Premium Quality Roofing Felt
All products come with a polyester-based, heavy-duty felt roof which has a clever backing that will seal itself down once warmed in the sun. The self-sealing felt gives our kennels extra protection against the elements.
Anti-Chew Strips Around Kennel Entrance
Our dog kennels include FREE anti-chew strips around pop holes. The aluminium stips prevent your dog from chewing the kennel entrance, therefore increasing the life-span of your dog kennel.

Strong and heavy duty dog run panels from a leading UK supplier
Our dog kennels come with 5cm gap bar dog run panels as standard. These dog run panels are galvanised, heavy-duty and are the preferred choice for many of our customers. We are able to provide alternative dog run panels if required, including 8cm bars, mesh and 3/4 mix solid. The dog run panels are also raised off the floor on feet to allow easy maintenance. Please call us to discuss.
