Dog Kennel Design

After an initial consultation, we drew up plans with our customer to design a kennel block system to suit their requirements.  Firstly, they wanted three dog kennels with runs.  They also required two side sheds: one tongue and groove, the other wipe clean and insulated.

Dog Cabins

Rather than a full-height kennel, our customer requested our cabin-style sleeping boxes.  Having a wipe-clean lid and being removable for easy cleaning, the top of the sleeping box also provides a raised bed for the dogs to jump up to during the day.  We added aluminium anti-chew strips to the pop holes (dog’s entrance to the sleeping box).  The anti-chew strips prevent damage from the dog and also extend the life of the kennel.  Furthermore, we don’t use any handles or similar on the lids.  This means that there is nothing for the dog to catch on when jumping up or down. The dog kennel sleeping boxes had PVC lined insulation, wipe clean flooring and side-sliding hatches.

Kennel Dog Runs

For the dog runs, we used 5cm gap bar galvanised dog run panels.  The bars let the dogs see each other while being kennelled, and they allow plenty of fresh air to circulate throughout the dog runs.  Furthermore, the bar dog run panels also prevent dogs from being able to climb up, and the central support bar provides extra strength in the panel.

Kennel Side Room

To the right of the kennel, we added a fully insulated and wipe clean side room.  Running the full depth of the kennel and run, it measured 5ft wide by 10ft 6 inches deep and provided over 50 square foot of space.  We filled the internal walls with polystyrene board and then fixed white PVC sheets over the top.  In addition, the flooring was upgraded to have a phenolic coating which provides an anti-bacterial and wipeable floor.  We also added two side windows which were glazed with 4mm thick toughened glass.

Side storage shed

To the opposite end of the kennel block was an additional storage shed.  Having a fully clad roof, walls and floor, the shed offers additional storage space for dog feed, leads or garden equipment.  This shed also had two glazed windows where we again added the 4mm toughened glass.
The entire structure was finished off with our Onduline roofing upgrade.  The corrugated bitumen has a longer lifespan than felt and is the perfect addition for kennels situated in windy or open locations.  The kennel was based on our Sterling Multi-Bay Dog Kennel Block.

Wooden Falconry Mews

Three bay falconry mews with bars and mesh windows

We were contacted to build a three bay wooden falconry mews for our customer’s birds of prey.  He requested that two housing units have 5cm galvanised bars, while the third would have 25mm x 25mm galvanised wire mesh.  We delivered and fitted the wooden aviary block to Llangollen in Wales. The three bay mews was based on our Sandwell Aviary Block. You can now buy our Carsington Falconry Mews on our website!

Bespoke Insulated Falconry Mews

Custom Built Falconry Mews for Housing Birds of Prey

Based on our Chapman aviary, this bespoke falconry mews had a security entrance and large birdhouse.  Our customer wanted a secure mews for their bird of prey, but they didn’t want any mesh on the building.  With this in mind, we swapped the mesh front for galvanised bars which is considered by many falconers to be safer for birds of prey.

Chapman Aviary

Features

The aviary needed to be fit for purpose – safe, easy to clean and usable.  The security entrance provided a two-door entry to prevent the bird from escaping, and we lined it with wipe-clean PVC.  The entrance also had a phenolic coated floor, which is hard-wearing and easy to clean with disinfectant.  As well as security, the entrance area also provided space to store feed, tethers and other raptor essentials. The large flight area had no flooring to allow our customer to add gravel after installation.  To keep the aviary cool in summer and warm in winter, we insulated the entire structure.  We lined the insulation with white PVC, therefore creating a space that is wipable and easy to clean.

Custom Built Dog Kennel, Run and Shed

Dog kennel with a large side dog run and storage shed

Our customer sent in a floorplan of a bespoke kennel layout based on our Sandon Double Kennel.  She wanted rear kennel sleeping area and large side dog run as well as a combined storage shed.  We insulated the dog kennel and lined with white PVC, and our customer also upgraded the flooring to be wipe clean.  The PVC lining and phenolic coated flooring is easy to clean and disinfect, therefore providing an anti-bacterial surface.  The kennel had access to the large dog run which had a total area of over 52 square feet.  The storage shed replaced what would normally have been the second dog run.  We built the shed from tanalised tongue and groove cladding and made sure that the door didn’t catch on a low wall in the garden.

Dog Kennel Upgrades

As well as lining the kennel with PVC insulation, we also added a wipe clean shelf.  The raised platform provided extra space for a second dog bed, and our customer sent in a photo of her dogs enjoying their bunk beds!

New for 2020 – Polypropylene Feet On Kennels, Aviaries & Benches!

Polypropylene feet on all of our kennel floors, aviary panels and dog sleeping benches.

New for 2020! Our dog kennels will now be supplied with FREE polypropylene feet to the sleeping area floor. Our kennel flooring in the bedding area will have greater airflow underneath.  The plastic spacer will also prevent damp from sneaking up through the timber. Sometimes a concrete or slab base can hold rainwater, and these plastic feet will stop direct contact between the wood and the floor. The spacers will also be added to the underside of all of our aviary panels, and to the framework on our raised dog sleeping benches.

Dog Kennel Flooring

We have always designed the flooring in our dog kennels for sale to have space underneath for airflow.  However, the timber framework has always had direct contact with the base underneath.  If, for example, rainwater should settle on your base, it would eventually be absorbed by the flooring’s framework. Our solution to this is the plastic feet.  The spacers are fixed to the underside of the bed flooring, leaving a 20mm gap between the framework and the base.  Therefore reducing the risk of water and cold being soaked into the kennel floor.  The result is a longer lasting and more comfortable kennel for your dog.

What About The Rest of the Kennel?

The dog kennel walls and sides sit on small pieces of framework- known as blocks.  They are spaced around the base of the kennel panels to stop the kennel sitting directly on the base.  The blocks allow space for airflow and for water to flow underneath, as well as keeping the timber away from direct contact with standing water.  We also recommend a water repellant be painted on to all of our kennels and animal housing to prevent water ingress and to prolong the lifespan of your dog kennel or aviary.
