Wooden falconry mews to house birds of prey having drop down shutters over window with galvanised bars
A two bay falconry mews delivered and installed to Guildford, having galvanised bars and closing window shutters.
Based on our Sandwell Aviary Block, we swapped the mesh windows for galvanised bars. It is sometimes an issue that some birds of prey can damage their feathers when mesh is used in an enclosure. Therefore, our customer requested 5cm gap bars be used instead to create a strong and safe housing unit. We also added drop-down, closing shutters which provide darkness and temperature control if required.
Our customer had a tight space to fit the mews, so we built it to his specification. He also requested a freezer shed to keep his raptor meals outside. The shed had double doors and a pent roof to match the aviary block.
We build our aviaries and raptor housing without a floor, therefore any preferred base material can be used and hosed out when required. This style of mews housing is ideal for adding perches and tethers.
Custom dog kennel, dog run and combined wooden shed
Another bespoke build, featuring an insulated dog kennel, sizeable extended dog run and a combined storage shed. We were sent a list of requirements as well as a floorplan sketch of the enclosure and shed layout. After a few phone calls and emails back-and-forth, we were able to finalise a design which we were both happy with. The structure comprised:
– 10ft x 6ft insulated kennel
– 14ft x 6ft storage shed
– 200 square foot dog run with mesh roof
The internal dog kennel had PVC lined insulation as well as a wipe-clean floor. The plastic sheeting and phenolic coated flooring provides an easy-clean kennel and is also anti-bacterial. Our customer requested full height kennel doors instead of pop holes for her Huskies. Upgrades also included Onduline roofing over the shed, kennel and part of the dog run. We covered the rest of the run with a timber-framed mesh roof.
A Triple Dog Kennel with Sleeping Boxes, Side Shutters and Galvanised Dog Runs
This bespoke triple dog kennel was built based on two of our standard triple kennels. Our Harrowby triple kennel has sleeping boxes with lift up lids, and our Lawrence wooden kennel with closing side-shutters. Our customer got in touch asking for a mix between the two kennels, as well as opting for extended dog runs.
The kennel measured 15ft wide by 14ft deep. Comprising of 5ft x 4ft sleeping boxes and 5ft x 10ft dog runs. We added a lift up lid to the sleeping boxes to make cleaning the kennel easier. Our customer also requested side sliding hatches over the dog pop holes.
Benefits of Sleeping Boxes
A sleeping box, also known as dog pods or dog cabins, can be chosen for a number of reasons. Specifically, there is less headspace for warm air to escape, therefore keeping the kennel warmer for longer. Another reason is that the box lid provides a raised area for the dog to jump up to during the day.
Benefits of Side-Shutters
The side shutters help to close out any distractions to your dogs. Additionally, they can help reduce barking noise if your kennel is located in your garden. Owners of guard dogs and security dogs choose this kennel option as it can also help to keep your dog calm inside.
How to beat the cold and keep draughts away in your dog kennel and runs
A dog kennel and run will usually provide ample protection from the cold and bad weather. But if your dog kennel and run is located in an open area with little or no shelter, there are things that you can do to help.
Here, we give some examples of what you can add to your new dog kennel and run to make sure that it provides enough warmth and comfort for your dog during the winter months.
PVC draught excluder, or draught screen
We provide clear plastic flaps over the dog kennel pop hole (dog entry) to prevent wind from blowing into the bed area. Your dog can still go in and out of the kennel as desired.
Internal draught board
An internal draught board is a solid upright board which your dog can lie behind in the kennel. It acts as a wind barrier, therefore keeping the kennel warmer and draught free.
Sliding hatch over dog pop hole
A sliding hatch closes down over the pop hole, acting as a complete barrier for wind and cold air. The sliding hatch is obnly recommended to be closed for short periods of time – maybe overnight – as your dog cannot access the run while shut.
3/4 mix dog run panel, also known as draught panel
A 3/4 mix dog run panel is solid metal from the bottom to three quarters of the way up. We have used these before on run ends to again provide protection from winds and rain.
PVC lined insulation to kennel bed area
We fill framework with polystyrene board and line with white PVC sheets. The insulation retains the heat in the kennel sleep (and can also keep it cool in the summer!) The wipe-clean plastic stays at an even temperature, therefore won’t have a condensation build-up. This is in contrast to materials such as metal which heat and cool quickly – especially when using a kennel heater.
Raised dog bed, or sleeping bench
A raised dog bed is also useful as it keeps your dog away from the floor. Most dog runs have a concrete base, which can get icy cold in winter frosts, as well as hold water. Our aised dog benches sit on a timber frame, allowing airflow underneath. This in turn keeps your dog warmer and more confortable.
We built this multi-bay kennel block with shed for our customer in Wigan, Greater Manchester.

Delivery Access Issues
When our customer first got in touch, she advised that access would be a bit of an issue. So, she sent a short video walkthrough from the front of her house round to where the kennel was to be built. To install the kennel, we would need to carry through an outbuilding. Because we knew before the start of manufacture, we were able to build the kennel in smaller panels. Therefore, delivery on site was easy and efficient, with no delays on the day!
